Under the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan, “New Skills and New Languages,” financed by the European Union’s Next Generation EU initiative, is introduced the programme “Actions to Enhance Science, Technology, Engineering e Mathematics (STEM) and Multilingual Competences.” Specifically, it focuses on implementing educational, training, and awareness for students regarding ecology and sustainability.
The aim is to integrate into Transition Year and Senior Cycle curricula activities, methodologies, and content designed to develop STEM, digital, and innovation skills, as well as language capabilities. Additionally, the programme underscores the importance of providing equal opportunities and ensuring gender equality, both in the methodologies applied and in the orientation activities offered.
Echoes of Change is a series of activities — talks, workshops, and interactive sessions — for Transition Year and Senior Cycle students in collaboration with Irish artists and scientists, the programme addresses the urgency of today’s environmental challenges, emphasising how creative thinking and scientific knowledge can intersect to inspire new ways of engaging with our planet.
By acknowledging the growing ecological crisis — ranging from climate change and rising greenhouse gas emissions to biodiversity loss and plastic pollution — Echoes of Change aims to deepen students’ understanding of the interconnectedness between human actions and the environment’s well-being. A flexible timetable, developed in consultation with both students and professionals, ensures that these sessions fit into existing academic commitments while confronting pressing issues such as deforestation, excessive resource consumption, and the long-term impacts of fast fashion.
At the heart of the programme is the recognition that art can be a powerful catalyst for transformation. By viewing ecological concerns through a creative lens, students are encouraged to question their daily choices and see how small shifts in behaviour — such as altering dietary habits, reconsidering consumer patterns, or reducing waste — can collectively lead to significant change. Through curated reading materials, Echoes of Change ‘plants the seeds’ of reflective dialogue, culminating in an art-led intervention in the school courtyard, overseen by an invited artist.
This final collaborative project brings together the skills and insights gained throughout the programme, demonstrating the potential for synergy between art and science to address environmental crises. By empowering young people to explore creative solutions, Echoes of Change aspires to nurture a generation ready to tackle the ecological challenges of today and tomorrow.
