Symphony of the Nowhere Belly – Prototype for Cyborgs

by | 7 Jun, 2024

Symphony of The Nowhere Belly – Prototypes for Cyborgs, is an extraordinary exhibition performance by acclaimed Irish artist Mark Cullen, curated by Valeria Ceregini. This marks the premiere showcasing of Cullen’s interactive playable sculpture, The Nowhere Belly in Europe, within his broader international project, Prototypes for Cyborgs.

“By the late twentieth century, our time, a mythic time, we are all chimeras, theorized and fabricated hybrids of machine and organism; in short, we are cyborgs”.1 — Donna Haraway

Prototypes for Cyborgs – A Space Opera” is an immersive journey into a realm where sculptural entities and environments, including YURT, Metal Slug Seer, A Portrait of the Artist as a Transhumanist (PAT), The Everything Vault, and The Nowhere Belly, converge, collide, and convulse presenting a posthuman exploration of transhumanism, vertical capital, and neofeudalism.

Following this manifestation in Berlin, Symphony of the Nowhere Belly will continue its journey across Europe and will be further realised in IMMA on the 3rd July and in Italy during Art Week in November as part of Diffusissima, Turin, 2024, curated by Valeria Ceregini.

Collaborating with sound artist Tadhg Kinsella, whose composition & sound design enriches the overarching project, Prototypes for Cyborgs, Cullen promises an immersive experience. Kinsella will join Cullen in performing the work live on the opening night, enhancing the multi-sensory nature of the exhibition.

The exhibition is supported by Culture Ireland, the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland, and the Embassy of Ireland, Germany, as part of the Zeitgeist Irland 24 initiative. This work was produced with the support of the Arts Council.
